Egbert Grandin explains why he is opposed to political antimasonry . . .

Two issues of this very scarce newspaper printed by Egbert Bratt Grandin, a few months before he began printing the Book of Mormon. These are the end of my Palmyra newspapers (of which I sold three other issues in worse condition in my online catalogs, for $2,000 each), except for later issues in very worn condition (and except for one issue which I am presently keeping for myself). The only other examples of Palmyra newspapers which I have been able to obtain during my quarter-century in business were two issues obtained approximately twenty years ago.

THE WAYNE SENTINEL . . . by E. B. Grandin.  Palmyra, New York, Friday, March 13, 1829 [6:25; whole no. 285].

Folio, 4 pp. (complete issue). All of the masthead printing is intact except for a small hole in the first letter of "THE.". Repaired using archival paste and japanese tissue; de-acidified. The two leaves have been re-joined along the back-fold line, and blank areas filled in with tissue, with only a little text loss; mostly complete. Only the slightest staining; quite clean and pleasing.

Contents include the usual Grandin & Tucker ads, plus intense political content. Of particular note is an extensive political editorial which I presume must be written by Grandin (but it is not signed; it leads the Wayne Sentinel editorial section beneath the little inside-masthead, and is fairly long. It is intensely against the political antimasons - but with a qualifying statement that the earlier, sincere antimasons were on the right track).

THE WAYNE SENTINEL . . . by E. B. Grandin.  Palmyra, New York, Friday, March 20, 1829 [6:25; whole no. 286].

Folio, 4 pp. (complete issue). All of the masthead printing intact. Repaired using archival paste and japanese tissue, filling in one small area in the inner margin with only modest text loss; virtually complete. Some staining, but quite presentable over-call.

Contents include the usual Grandin & Tucker ads, plus intense political content. There is a substantial editorial against political antimasonry, presumably written by Grandin. There is also a lengthy letter from Palmyra Masons, defending the Fraternity, signed in type by many Palmyra citizens. Also, text of letters from Martin Van Buren (a little text loss, however) and by the new acting governor (Enos T. Throop) of New York, in which he refers to antimasonry.
