"Nauvoo, From the Mississippi, Looking Down the River." A simple but attractive woodcut engraving of Nauvoo fills half a page in . . .
GLEASON'S PICTORIAL DRAWING-ROOM COMPANION (illustrated newspaper, Boston) for Saturday, July 22, 1854 (VII:3; Whole No. 159)].
Folio. The entire issue measures 15 X 11 inches, paged [33]-48 (16 pages, complete). Numerous other interesting engravings include two full pages of Japanese scenes & court attire. A short tear in the margin of the front page does not affect printed matter. Very good, disbound.

HERE IS one of my favorite views of Nauvoo (though not elaborate), and it comes along only infrequently. It fills the lower half of page 36, and offers a pleasing, uncomplicated scene from the river (7 X 9 inches + margins, quite pleasant and clean), the temple dominating the skyline.

A short text entitled, "Nauvoo City," is printed immediately above the picture, explaining that on October 9, 1848, "The great Mormon Temple, which stood in fair view from the river, . . . was destroyed by fire, and now presents only a blackened pile of ruins."
